Emily Lyle

Emily Lyle (sündinud 19. detsembril 1932 Glasgow's) on folklorist, mütoloogia, kosmoloogia ja šoti ballaadide uurija, Edinburghi Ülikooli keldi ja šoti kultuuri instituudi vanemteadur.

Elukäik

Emily Lyle kasvas Šotimaal Renfrewshire'is Kilbarchanis. Ta õppis Saint Andrewsi Ülikoolis inglise keelt ja kirjandust, lõpetas ülikooli 1955.

Kuus aastat õpetas ta inglise keelt Inglismaa ja Uus-Meremaa koolides, seejärel oli inglise keele lektorina Ripon College'is Yorkshire'is (1961–1965). 1965–1968 töötas ta inglise keele vanemlektorina Neville's Cross College Durhamis.

1967 kaitses ta doktoritöö "A Study of Thomas the Rhymer and Tam Lin in Literature and Tradition" Leedsi Ülikooli Rahvakultuuri instituudi juures. Sellest sai alguse tema šoti kultuuri uurimine, hiljem huvi mütoloogia vastu.

1970–1998 oli ta Edinburghi Ülikooli lektor ja 1970–1995 Edinburghi Ülikooli keldi ja šoti kultuuri instituudi teadlane. 1978 folkloristika külalisprofessor California Ülikoolis Los Angeleses; 1979–1982 rahvatraditsiooni külalislektor Sirlingi Ülikoolis. Alates 1998 on ta Edinburghi Ülikooli keldi ja šoti kultuuri instituudi auliige.

1974–1975 Harvardi Ülikooli Radcliffe'i instituudi juures tehtud töö muutis ta tuntuks ballaadiuurijana ja jätkus korduvate visiitidena Harvardi. 1995. aastast töötas ta Maailma Religioonide Uurimise Keskuses.

Emily Lyle on panustanud šoti ja teiste rahvaste kalendritavandi ja mütoloogia tõlgendamisse. 1994. aastast oli ta ajakirja Cosmos peatoimetaja, ta on Eesti teadusartiklite sarja "Sator" rahvusvahelise kolleegiumi liige. Ta oli [[|Rahvusvaheline Etnoloogia ja Folkloori Selts|Rahvusvahelise Etnoloogia ja Folkloori Seltsi]] töörühma Rituaalne Aasta algataja 2004, 2005–2011 töörühma president, 2011– auliige, ühtlasi töörühma väljaannete sarja peatoimetaja.

Välitööd

Aastatel 1976–1977 oli ta Australian National University külalisteadlane. Ta kogus suulist pärimust šotlastelt. Osa salvestistest on avaldatud CD-l "Chokit on a Tattie" (lastelaulud ja -salmid), osa avaldatud ajakirjas Tochter. 1977 annetas Lyle oma salvestiste koopiad Austraalia Rahvusraamatukogule.

Traditional Cosmology Society

E. Lyle tegutseb The Traditional Cosmology Societys. Selts on seotud müüdi-, religiooni- ja kosmoloogiauuringutega eri ajastutel ja eri kultuuripiirkondades. Selts korraldab kõnekoosolekuid ja ühepäevast aastakonverentsi Edinburghi Ülikooli keldi ja šoti kultuuri instituudi juures ning annab kord aastas välja ajakirja Cosmos. The Journal of the Traditional Cosmology Society.

• 1997 Henry Duncani loengu auhind panuse eest šoti kultuuri uurimisse
• Šoti Kirjanduse Uuringute Seltsi auliige
• Šoti Traditsioonilise Muusika ja Laulu Assotsiatsiooni eluaegne liige
• 2003 Teadusraamatu auhind Šoti Rahvusraamatukogult. Sai selle kKoos Katherine Campbelligga "The Greig-Duncan Folk Song Collectioni" 8. osa eest.
