Iron Age Augenfibeln or eye brooch
Kirjeldus
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy continental 'Augenfibeln' or Eye brooch of Iron Age date. It is missing the spring and pin due to old breaks and all surfaces are extremely worn, the bow bent at the centre due to post-depositional damage resulting in the head and catchplate almost touching. The head is flat, oval shaped in form with projecting oval shaped knops to either side and the remains of an incomplete but integrally cast spring visible at the centre of the rear edge. It is decorated with two large circular perforations that resemble eyes and fill most of the head plate. The bow beneath is flat, rectangular in form with a slight mid rib on the front face. Mid way down the bow there is a transverse rib or ridge that is oval shaped in section. Beneath the mid rib the bow expands to a flaring foot that is flat with a slight central vertical rib and possible traces of decoration on the front face, although this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate that is rectangular in form and missing its outer edge due to old breaks. The entire object measures 37.38mm in length (bent), 16.59mm in width (at head, 8.11mm at bow), 2.58mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 9.21g.

This is a continental brooch of Iron Age date belonging to a group termed Eye brooches or 'Augenfibel' due to the decoration evident on the headplate. Brooches such as this are rare in Britain and this is only the second recorded through the PAS from Suffolk (see also SF-703A54). It finds its closest parallels in examples from Augst, Germany, falling in Riha's Type 2.3.2 Augenfibeln group (Riha, 1979: pp. 68-69, nos. 194-197, especially no. 195). Similar examples have been excavated in Britain (e.g. Bayley and Butcher, 2004: no. 35, pp. 148) and these indicate a date range in the 1st century BC or AD, c.27 BC-79 AD. The current example is of similar date and may have been brought to Britain with the Roman military during or following the conquest.
