English: Pea crop beside bridleway. The first section of the public bridleway > 902020 which turns off in a sharp bend of Beck Lane follows the border of a large field > 1004449 to the east, and the course of a stream and adjoining wet ground in the west. Several drains run at right angles to the stream. After passing the first field, which this year was growing a crop of sugar beet, now harvested, the pea crop in the adjoining field is still waiting to be taken in. The pea is one of the four most important cultivated legumes next to soybean, groundnut, and beans and the total world production rose from 8.127 million metric tons in 1979-81 to 14.529 million metric tons in 1994. The highest productivity for pea was reported in France at 5088 kg per hectare in 1994, about eight times more than the African average yield. Important production areas of the world include France, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark and United Kingdom in Europe; China and India in Asia; Canada and USA in North America; Chile in South America; Ethiopia in Africa, and Australia. Peas are cultivated for fresh green seeds and pods and for dried seeds and foliage.
