Shakuntala Devi sündis [[Bangalore|Bangalores]] ([[Karnataka]], India) Kannada õigeusklikust braahmani perre.<ref name="TIME" /> Devi isa ei tahtnud hakata preestriks ning selle asemel liitus ta hoopis tsirkusega, kus töötas trapetsikunstniku, lõvitaltsutaja, köielkõndija ja [[Mustkunst|mustkunstnikuna]].<ref name="BANGALORE" /> Ta avastas oma tütre võime numbrite erakordse meelespidamisevõime õpetades tütrele kaarditrikke kui tütar oli umbes kolm aastat vana. Isa lõpetas tsirkusetöö ja viis oma tütre ringreisile demonstreerimaks tema fenomenaalset arvutamisvõimet hoolimata lapse formaalse hariduse puudumisest. 6-aastaselt tutvustas Devi isa tema matemaatilisi võimeid Mysore`'i ülikoolis.
1944.- aastal kolis ta isaga Londonisse.
