After burning its source of hydrogen the main-sequence stars turn to the only source f energy left, helium. Helium, which has a cooler temperature "cools" down the star, making it not as bright. The Star then expands since helium is lighter than the atmosphere around it, not only changing the color but exanding the star itself - Alexander Nuttle
