ElukäikRedigeeri

Kai Kaljo on sündinud 20.augustil 1959. aastal. Ta lõpetas Tallinna Muusikakeskkooli 1977. aastal ja Tallinna Kunstiülikooli maaliosakonna 1990. aastal.[2]

Kaljo on töötanud 2007-2015 Tallinna Ülikooli Kunstide Instituudi professorina ning kuni 2017.aastani oli Kaljo Balti filmi, meedia, kunstide ja kommunikatsiooni instituudi kaasaegse kunsti dotsent.[3]

Kuigi Kaljo on lõpetanud kunstiakadeemias maalieriala, on ta laiemalt tuntuks saanud installatsiooni- ja videokunstnikuna. Kunstniku tähelend ja rahvusvaheline tuntus sai alguse videotööga "Luuser" (1997), mis räägib eneseirooniliselt ja sotsiaalkriitiliselt kunstniku autsaideri positsioonist.

"Kai Kaljo töid iseloomustab emotsionaalsus, isegi poeetilisus, mis toob vaatajani läbitunnetatud sõnumi. Ja samas on ta vaieldamatult väga terane vaatleja - suur osa tema tööde ainestikust on elust enesest, kunstnik on osanud olla õigel ajal õiges kohas, pööranud tähelepanu millelegi, mida enamik möödujaid, kas üldse ei ole märganud või siis on kustutanud järgmisel hetkel mälust. Enamgi veel, ta on selle jäädvustanud videolindile ning seetõttu äratanud uuele elule. "[4]

Kunstikriitik Mari Laaniste on öelnud, et Kai Kaljo on kunstis sotsiaalsem ja sotsialiseeruvam kui kunstis kombeks. Tema videotöid iseloomustav avatus ja inimlik mõõde ongi osutunud rahvusvahelises kunstipildis nõutumaks kui kodukandis. Seda kuvandit on kultiveerinud kunstniku enda minapilt, mis ehk kaasajas kõlab pisut utreeritult, kuid arvestades kunstnike valdavat positsiooni ühiskonnas, jab ilmselt alatiseks aktuaalseks.[5]

Kunstniku isa, graafik Richard Kaljo kirjutas 1960.–1970. aastatel tütrele rohkesti kirju, milles kajastub Eesti XX sajandi esimese poole dramaatiline ajalugu üksikisiku kogemuse kaudu. Nende ja muude materjalide põhjal koostas Kaljo video "Isa kirjad" (2014).
