reased by thebreaking out of a fire in 1811, which de-stroyed the roofs of the choir and its sidechapels and much of the interior decora-tion, columns, marble plates, mosaics, etc.The church was then taken in hand, andduring the second quarter of the centurywas very carefully and conscientiously re-paired and restored.^ Externally the cathedral of Monrealehas much resemblance to that of Cefalii.This resemblance is particularly markedin the facade, where the two square flank-ing towers, projecting well forward onfront and sides enclose between thema deep porch with three broad, stilted,pointed arches supported on columns.Above the porch the wall is crossed by aninterlacing blind arcade of pointed arches,in the middle of which is a single plainpointed window. The wall at the back ofthe porch has an elaborate but not beau-tiful central doorway, with three ordersof jamb columns and arches, enclosing the famous bronze doors ofBonanno of Pisa, already described in a previous chapter.
