Yi-Fu Tuani tuntuim kontseptsioon on ruumist (''space'') ja kohast (''place''). Inimese kultuuriline tegevus on vaadeldav kui ruumi muutmine kohtadeks: ruumis kohtade loomine, neile tähenduse ja nime andmine.
 
Yi-Fu Tuani kontseptsiooni kohaselt on linn seda enam linn, mida vähem on seal tunda öö ja päeva ning aastaaegade vaheldumist. Linn on seega inimeste loodud kunstlik keskkond, milles püütakse võimalikult vähendada looduslike tegurite mõju.
