2000. aastal ilmunud raamat "A Terrible Beauty: the People and Ideas that Shaped the Modern Mind" ([[USA]]-s ilmus 2001. aastal pealkirja all:pealkirjaga "The Modern Mind: An Intellectual History of the 20th Century"; [[eesti keel]]de tõlgiti teos 2004. aastal) on Peter Watsoni põhjalik ülevaade 20. sajandi vaimuloost. Teoses esitatakse kokkuvõte olulisematest arengutestarengusuundadest möödunud sajandi kultuuriloos: [[kirjandus]]es, [[filosoofia]]s, [[Humanitaarteadused|humanitaar-]] ja [[täppisteadus]]tes, [[muusika]]s, [[kunst]]is ja [[filmikunst]]is ning tutvustatakse põgusalt kõiki [[20. sajand]]i olulisemaid loomeinimesi ja teadlasi, samuti mõjukamid mõtte- ja [[kunstivool]]e.<ref name="apollo"/>
====Kriitika====
[[Kriitik]] [[Hasso Krull]] nendib, et Watsoni "Kohutav ilu" suurteos ei ole suurteos. Ta heidab raamatule ette hõlmamatust, kuigi tema sisu püütakse kokku võtta lugematutes tõlgendustes ja ümberjutustustes. Biograafilisele lähenemisele omaselt teeb Watson seda ennekõike isikulooliste portreede kaudu. Raamatus on iga tühine detail, iga mõttetu elulooline seik pilkupüüdvam kui see, mille pärast raamat on kirjutatud, mida ta tahab tõestada. Krull leiab, et "moraal, milleni Peter Watson viimaks jõuab, pärast kogu hajusate faktide kribu-krabu, on ju täiesti triviaalne ja õõnes".<ref name="sirp"/>
