Sõnajalgtaimedele on juba iseloomulik [[vars|varre]] harunemine ja vee liikumiseks arenenud [[trahheiidid]]. Need tunnused ühendavad neid kõrgemate taimedega [[soontaimed]]e (''Tracheophyta'') rühma.
Sõnajalgtaimedest arenesid kaks tänapäeval valitsevat taimede rühma – [[paljasseemnetaimed]] ja [[õistaimed]] ehk katteseemnetaimed (koondnimetusega [[seemnetaimed]]). Varem valitsev olnud seisukoht katteseemnetaimede põlvnemisest paljasseemnetaimedest pole uuemate uuringutega kinnitust leidnud
